What is a certified translation?
In Germany, “amtliche” (literally: official), also known as “bescheinigte” (literally: certified), according to the German Code of Civil Procedure (ZPO), and colloquially known as “beglaubigte” (literally: certified) translations are translations whose accuracy and completeness have been certified by an authorized or sworn translator (in this case, for the English language). Together with the signature and seal of the respective sworn translator for the English language, the official translation from English into German is then joined to a copy of the original. For reasons of comprehensibility, the layout of the translation is adopted as best as possible. In compliance with these principles, the certified translation is valid for all official purposes and is recognized by authorities, agencies, courts, universities, employers and other institutions all throughout Germany.
Depending on the federal state or authority, you may find many different synonymous official denominations, such as “bescheinigte” or “bestätigte Übersetzung” (both literally: certified translation), “vereidigte Übersetzung” (literally: sworn translation), “amtliche Übersetzung” (literally: official translation) or just “Urkundenübersetzung” (literally: certification translation) English > German / German > English. Even if initially confusing, in the end all these terms are synonyms.
Certified, sworn or official translator for English?
The same applies to the different terms “beeidigter Übersetzer” (literally: sworn translator), “ermächtigter Übersetzer“ (literally: certified translator), or just „Urkundenübersetzer“ (literally: translator for certificates). In Germany, these denominations are used synonymously.
For what purposes do I require a “certified” translation of my English documents?

Documents that usually require a certified translation include, among others, transcripts and degrees of any kind for recognition offices, colleges/universities or apprenticeship positions; certifications of vital record, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, but also marital status certificates and certificates of no impediment (to marriage) for all authorities regarding marriage and family matters, may it be the registry office (Standesamt) or any other authority; resident registration certificates, e.g. for the residence registration; driver’s licenses for the transfer process (Umschreibung); criminal record certificates/certificates of good conduct, e.g. when applying for a job or visa; and other certificates.
